This guy is a propagandist for the insurance companies. He says that insurance companies provide a valuable service to both patients and health care professionals. He says that insurance companies negotiate with providers to lower costs to patients and supply hundreds of patients to the health care professionals.As a mental health provider for the past 13 years I can report that insurance companies dictate rates to providers they do not negotiate. Professionals can accept the insurance companies rates as payment in full or they can drop out of the network. "Take it or leave it." For the past 13 years reimbursement rates have never increased. Recently they have in fact started to decrease. With all of the talk about health care costs increasing faster than inflation I have not seen any of it show up in my reimbursement payments.
As a health care consumer, I have seen my premiums and my copays steadily increase. So from my perspective the insurance companies are taking in more and more from consumers and they are paying less and less to providers. The only interests being served by the insurance companies are those of the company executives and their stock holders. Mr. Vassilaros is their propagandist and liar in chief. His explanation of health care reform reminds me of the cigarette companies claims that cigarettes don't cause cancer and they don't market to children.

I'm a health care consultant and have found very few books that do a good job of explaining health care reform or the Affordable Care Act. However, I found Health Care Reform for Humans to be very engaging and enjoyable to read. I liked the analogies and humor the author used to explain specific aspects of the Affordable Care Act. If you are new to health care reform or already understand the Affordable Care Act you will enjoy this book.
Dave Vassilaros has accomplished quite a feat; An easy to read primer on the financial, social, and economic issues driving the U.S. health care reform movement. The informal sytle, thoughtful analogies, and personal anecdotes, when combined with the logical sequence of (very concise) chapters, results in a well presented framework for the American healthcare experience and issues moving forward.
This book is a MUST READ for anyone that has felt intimidated by the sheer size and complexity of the issues surrounding U.S. health insurance, health care, and/or the Affordable Care Act; from newcomers and students to those of us in the impacted industries alike.
Let's face it, this topic can be really challenging to make interesting! David Vassilaros has taken this topic on and made it understandable for most everyone. It includes a lot of good background material on how health insurance works, and dispels some myths about the industry. This book is a great way for people to understand the key elements of the Health Care Reform provisions that are coming into the marketplace. It also raises some interesting questions about whether the consequences of reform will be what its authors intended. This is a must read for smart consumers of health care and health insurance in a fast changing market.

If you are looking for a very low-level description of the Health Care Reform then this is your book. Being a health care professional, I was disappointed in the basic overview and hoped to gain a better understanding of the Health Care Reform at a higher level than what this book provided.
There is some humor in the book making the read not complete waste of my time.

It's engaging with everyday life stories, examples, and a refined sense of humor.
